Pastels
are a type of art media which comes in the form of sticks. The word
is of French origin, which in turn came from an Italian word. The French
originally used it to describe the chalk-like substance found in their
“crayons,” or pencils.
There are many different kinds of pastels with which an artist may
work. Soft kinds are the most widely used. They smudge very easily and
may require a fixative for storage. This is especially true when heavy
layers of the medium have been utilized.
Oil pastels are another popular variety. These have a greater amount
of binder compared to pigment than other types. The pigment holds better
to itself and the paper as a result. Other pastel options include those
with hard consistencies and some with binders that mix well with water.
