Art supplies

Art suppliesWhile some artists require little more than blank paper and pencils, others need easels, canvases, a variety of paints and cleaners, and more. The medium an artist chooses usually dictates the types and amounts of supplies needed.

One of the most important art supplies is a canvas. The term canvas is used loosely, as it can represent not only the traditional canvas on which an artist paints, but also more figuratively the background on which an artist chooses to display the piece of art. Many artists are not painters and require different types of canvases for art display. Some choose paper, others digital media, and even others choose less traditional items like wood or stone. The traditional type of painting canvas is usually a stretched cloth made of cotton, linen, hemp, flax, or other blends of material which has been treated in order to effectively receive the paints used. Painting canvases come in a wide range of sizes for different painting needs.

Often, an artist painting on a canvas will want an easel on which to place it. An easel is one of the more common art supplies. It can be constructed of wood or metal, and usually consists of three legs, with the back leg being adjustable in order to fold it flat when not in use. A level crossbar is built onto the front two legs in order to support the canvas and other supplies used for painting. Easels also come in a variety of sizes, depending on artist preference and canvas size.

Other basic art supplies include things like pens, pencils, markers, chalks, charcoals, paintbrushes, paints and molding clay. Artists may prefer different items for different pieces of art. Many artists are comfortable in only one medium such as paints or pencils, while others can express themselves effectively in multiple mediums.

For a beginning artist, choosing paints can be overwhelming. The most common types of paints are oil, watercolor, and acrylic. Each is used for different effects and styles. Beginning artists may decide to take a class to help them determine which style works best for their needs and self-expression.

Some art supplies are less obvious but still important. In order to be able to use them for a long time, they need to be cared for properly. This includes careful cleaning and storage when not in use. If paintbrushes are not cleaned, the leftover paint can make the bristles stiff and hard to control, sometimes with unintended or undesired results. Artists need paint cleaners, paint thinners, rags, and a variety of other cleaners in order to keep their other supplies in top shape and ready for use whenever inspiration hits.

Art supplies are an investment in the artist's craft and the artist directly. Some are expensive and will require research and comparison shopping to ensure the best, longest-lasting option is chosen.
