An
artist canvas is something that can seem restrictive to an artist. However,
if a person decides to think outside of the box, there are a million
different things that can be used as a canvas. In fact, a person can
build an artist canvas by doing the following:
• Know the size – Before an artist canvas can be built,
a person must think about the size. The canvas size should be based
on this estimate and the size of the frame in which the canvas will
be placed.
• Cut – Next, cut four sides of any type of wood. The wood
can be assembled using a heavy-duty staple gun and some strong glue.
If the canvas is very large, extra support can be added by adding another
piece of wood to the center of the frame. Attach this piece with staples.
• Attach the canvas – A person can begin to attach the
artist canvas by starting on any side of the frame. For best results,
a person should use a raw, rolled canvas that has not been primed. The
canvas can be cut so that it covers the entire frame. The sides of the
frame should overlap about 3-4 inches.
• Fold the corners – Folding back the corners is the last
thing that needs to be done. The corners should be folded as if they
are wrapping paper to the backside of the frame. Be sure to pull the
artist canvas tight and stable. A person who does this can then cut
away any excess.
By building his or her own artist canvas, a person can get exactly
what they want from the painting surface.
