Oil paint has a an artistic quality of being thick and buttery and as it is squeezed from the tube it possesses a distinctive feel that truly inspires. Oil paint can be diluted down with thinners to a transparent wash that allows the artist to create with a light and airy medium.

When you first decide that oil painting is for you, the choice of art supplies at your disposable can be overwhelming and confusing. So here's a short list of all the oil painting supplies you should consider to start.
First is color, there a lot different colors of paint and the wide range of colors are seductive. In reality there are but a few basics that you can start with a that allow you to combine and mix to give you the unique colors you are looking for. As you experiment and learn your trade there are colors that you will get to know well and will be able to combine and mix to create absolutely beautiful and vibrant hues. And while this will take some time to master you will eventually be able to mix the basics quickly and have what you desire. The Basic colors consist of:
- cadmium red (medium) or naphthol red
- phthalo blue
- cadmium yellow (medium)
- phthalo green
- burnt umber
- titanium white (opaque)
- zinc white (transparent) and
- Payne's grey
You will notice that black is not on our list but in reality you can create a richer black by combining the right colors to create a truly unique blackthat allow you to shadow and create depth.
Now with oil paints it can be messy so you will want to be prepared to remove excess paint either from your brush or from the canvas. You can use almost anything, an old shirt or rag of some sort that will treat your tools gently.
Oil paint can be almost impossible to get out of your clothes, so make sure to wear a heavy-duty apron to protect your clothes.
Now you are ready. Take an assessment of what you have in your art supply and you will need to make a choice as to what quality of paint you want and how it will be used.. Obviously the better quality the more it will cost you.
